Deep in The Hundred Acre Wood... - November 2006

These are the Winnie the Pooh themed cakes I made for my daughter, Carissa's, 2nd birthday.  One was a honey pot cake and the other was a beehive cake.

The honey pot cake and the beehive cake are both baked from the same glass batter bowl, one is just turned over to give it a different shape.  They are iced with buttercream, and the 'honey' is buttercream icing as well.  The word 'HUNNY' is piped on the honey pot cake with black icing.  The Winnie the Pooh figures are just 2 Lego Winnie the Pooh toys.  (I didn't have time to make my own.)  I put a little of the yellow 'honey' icing on Winnie the Pooh's hand on the beehive cake to make it look like he was eating the honey.  I made the bees out of fondant and then painted on them with food coloring.  This was the first time I had used fondant for anything, so that was neat.

  4. I have been looking for hours for a cake I could possibly make for my baby's first birthday. I think I could do this! I feel inspired! You did a great job. Do you remember what kind of bowl you used? Was it very difficult? Thanks!

    1. Lindsay - Thanks, I'm glad you liked them and that they helped you in your search. :)

I'm not sure which cake you are considering, but they both were made in a glass batter bowl (has measurements on the side with a handle and spout). The one I used was an Anchor Hocking 2 quart bowl, but I'm sure any kind would work.

I just used a box mix, so it filled however much a box mix yields. It takes longer than normal for the middle to bake through, so just be aware of that. If you have a heating core or something to help get heat to the middle that would help.

Neither cake was too difficult. The bees' wings were a little tricky attaching to the body and wanted to droop while drying, but that was probably the hardest thing about it.

Hope that helped. Thanks again and good luck on your cake! :)
