3D Horse Cake - June 2010
I made this horse cake for my daughter, Cara's, 11th birthday.
The body and neck of the horse are made up of cakes baked
in a 9"x 13" pan, a 7" x 11" pan - I think (those two mainly made up the body), a medium-sized glass
measuring cup (which mainly made up the neck), and then various scraps or parts of
another cake used to fill in or add to spots here and there. After I got the main part of the body and neck assembled I added the head on with skewers. The head is actually a hollow paper mache type craft egg that I had on hand (the same as used in my Spider-Man cake). I covered it with foil. You could, of course, use rice krispy treats for the head, a lot of people do, and you may get a better shape that way. I wanted to fill out the head/face with some fondant or something to make it more of a realistic shape, but unfortunately I didn't have the time. Once the head was on I carved the cake (and added on the scraps) to make the shape that I wanted. Then I crumb coated the body and the neck and let the icing set.
The legs, tail, and the ears were made
using foil wrapped around plastic wrap
(just to not have to use so much foil).
As I mentioned with the head you could, of course, use rice krispy treats, modeling chocolate, etc. for any
of the non-edible parts that I made if you’re comfortable with that medium or
want to try it.After I got the legs and tail in the position I wanted them, I iced over the whole cake with chocolate buttercream. Then once the whole cake was iced I went over it with a hot knife (by dipping it in hot water) to smooth the icing out some.
The tail and mane were piped on using a grass tip with chocolate
buttercream tinted black. Then I added details on for the hooves
and face.Cara really loved her cake! Yippee! :)

More Horse Cupcakes... but Different :) - May 2010
My daughter, Cara, wanted to have a horse theme for her birthday party. So, I made these horse cupcakes for her to celebrate her birthday with her 5th grade class at school.
After I baked and cooled the cupcakes completely, I iced them with vanilla buttercream icing. Then, I put some chocolate buttercream in a piping bag and piped the horses on freehand.

Horse Cupcakes - May 2007
For my daughter, Cara's, celebration of her birthday with her class in 2nd grade I made her these horse cupcakes.
My sister, Casandra, had given me a magazine that had the idea in it awhile before, but by time I was going to make them I had misplaced the magazine (I think the magazine was Woman's World.). Luckily I had already looked at it so I remembered the basics of what they used to make them.

After I baked, cooled, and iced the cupcakes I put a peppermint patty on top and iced it for the nose. I used Bugles (iced over) for the ears. I started out spreading the icing on the Bugles with a knife, but then I think I switched to dipping them in the icing (heated a little in the microwave to thin) to make it easier. Next I piped on two white ovals and put M&Ms on each for the eyes. I piped on the nostrils and mouth; then I piped on the little diamond-y shape on the top of the nose. I used a star tip to pipe the mane. I put some brown icing stripes along the insides of my piping bag before I put in the white icing, so when it was piped out it would have both colors in the mane. All the icing I used was vanilla, just tinted with food coloring to make it the various colors, but you could use chocolate if you wanted to.
Cara, her class, and her teacher all really liked the cupcakes! :)

My Little Pony, My Little Pony... - July 2004
I originally saw this idea on a show that used to come on that Cara and I would watch together called Zoom. It was a kid's show with crafts, recipes, games, silly skits, etc. that was hosted by kids.
After I mixed the batter I separated it into three bowls and colored the batter rainbow colors. I layered the colors when I poured the batter in the pan; so when we cut the cake it was colored pink, yellow, and blue like the icing. That was a fun surprise. I baked the cake in a Bundt pan. I cut the cake in half and stood the halves up to look like rainbows. Then I iced them in buttercream that I had tinted rainbow colors.
The ponies are pictures that I cut out from her My Little Pony toys' packaging and then laminated. After the cake was iced I put the ponies in various places around the rainbows. I attached paper that looked like grass around the bottom rainbow and paper that looked like sky around the top rainbow to make it look like one was on the ground and one was in the sky.
