Rock Candy Baby Shower Cake - March 2014

I made this cake for my sister Valerie and her husband Josh for a baby shower in honor of their 2nd baby.  I also made some gluten free cupcakes (regular and mini) that matched the cake for some of her friends who have a gluten allergy.

Rock Candy Baby Shower Cake

My sister had seen the basic rock candy cake design in a picture.  She wanted to change the colors of the candy to go with their baby theme colors and wanted to add a personalized fondant topper to announce the baby's name.  I ended up making homemade rock candy for the cake.

Gender Reveal Cake - It's a... ??? - November 2013

When my sister Valerie was pregnant with their second baby, she and her husband decided to find out the gender.  After some persuading from her friends :) they decided to have a gender reveal party, and they asked me if I would bake the cake for it.  My mom offered to decorate it, but they didn't want us both to know the gender ahead of time, so after I baked and assembled the cake I frosted it with a layer of icing that would conceal any of the colored cake before handing it off.  Then, my mom finished frosting and decorating it.

Baby Gender Reveal Cake

I baked French vanilla almond sour cream cake in 2- 9 inch cake pans and French vanilla almond sour cream cake tinted 'the mystery color' in 3- 9 inch cake pans.  Since I was using a crystal cake stand, I put a round cake circle on the stand under the cake so no one would see the color of the cake through the crystal.  ;)  I alternated layers of colored and white cake and iced them with white frosting in between as I stacked them.  When all the layers were assembled I iced the cake with a crumb coat.  After the crumb coat set I iced the cake with just enough frosting so my mom couldn't see the color of the cake when she went to decorate it.

My mom iced the cake with white frosting and made little peaks on the sides.  My sister had asked her to write 'Oh, Baby!' on the cake, so she piped it in green icing on the top.  Then she used pearlized pink, blue, and green sixlets around the base of the cake and several on the top.

The cake turned out really cute and sweet, and when they cut the cake everyone was excited to find out they were having a...

Once I gave her the cookies she was going to put string through the hole with a tag attached to it to finish them.

My mom went to the shower and snapped a few pictures of the cookies (below) after my friend had added the strings and tags to them.  The tags had the baby's name and the due date written on them.

Amanda, from i am baker, created these rose cakes and makes them so beautifully.  She has lots of great variations, not to mention tons of other great things to check out on her site.  One of the best things is that she has a step by step tutorial AND a video tutorial for this technique, which is great to be able to actually see it being done.  This technique is easy but it has beautiful and elegant results!

Cake Assist: Baby Rattle Cake - May 2010

My mom was making a baby shower cake for someone, and she asked if I could help her out with part of it.  She was making a 3D baby rattle and asked if I could make the handle.  Then she would take it and attach it to the ball part of the rattle that she was making from cake.
