Teacher Appreciation Tulip Cupcakes - May 2012

I made these tulip cupcakes for my son, Caleb's, 4th grade homeroom teacher.  On a list of her favorites she wrote tulip down for one of her favorite flowers, so we thought that would be cute.  Caleb helped pick what colors to make the tulips.

The cupcakes are just chocolate cupcakes baked, cooled completely, then iced using a medium-sized open star tip to pipe a large swirl to cover the top of the cupcake.

To make the tulips, I bought some long lollipop sticks and cut them in half.  I painted them green with some watered down food coloring and set them aside to dry.  Next, I tinted some fondant green to match the color of the sticks.  I rolled out the green fondant and cut out shapes similar to tulip leaves.  I used some fondant tools to thin and elongate the leaves in the necessary places.  Then I lay the leaves on top of some of the extra lollipop sticks to let them dry with a little curve to them.

I tinted some fondant pink and rolled a piece into a ball.  I inserted one of the green lollipop sticks into the ball to serve as a base for the tulip petals.  I rolled out the rest of the pink fondant and used a large petal cutter from a set I have to cut out 5 petals.  Using some fondant tools I thinned and rounded out the petals where needed.  Then I used some water to attach the petals around the ball base.  I smoothed and furled my petals here and there to get the look that I wanted for the tulip.

Next, I inserted the tulip into the cupcake and then placed two of my leaves into the icing on either side of the stick.  Then I repeated the steps for the purple and yellow tulips using their respective colors of fondant.

I was happy with the way these cupcakes turned out.  I thought they looked sweet, bright, and Spring-y.  :)  Caleb's teacher really liked them too!  :)

Paint Me a Picture - January 2010

I made this vase of roses cake for my sister, Casandra's, birthday, along with all the watercolor painting themed stuff around it.  She loves to paint, especially with watercolors.  So, I thought this would be cute for her like she was painting a picture of a vase of roses.

Rainbow Cookies - November 2008

I made these Care Bear themed rainbow cookies to put in the kids' goodie bags at my daughter, Carissa's, 4th birthday party.

Care Bear Rainbow Cookies 1

Care Bear Rainbow Cookies 2
Care Bear Rainbow Cookies 3
To make these rainbow cookies I mixed up some sugar cookie dough which I then separated into 3 sections.  I used food coloring to tint one ball of dough pink, one ball of dough yellow, and one ball of dough blue.  I set the yellow and blue aside for a bit and worked with the pink first.

I thinned the pink dough with some water to get a consistency that I could pipe the dough using a piping bag & decorating tip.  I used a medium sized round tip and piped the large pink arcs of the rainbows onto some parchment paper.  After I was done piping the pink arcs I thinned the yellow dough and piped the yellow arcs.  Then I did the same thing for the blue dough.  After all the rainbows were complete I baked the cookies.

I thought they looked pretty cute, and it was a neat alternative to painting them or using icing to get the different colors.

Below is a progression of piping the cookies, and the finished product once baked.  :)

A Rose Cake by any Other Name Would Still Taste YUMMY! - August 2008

I made this rose cake for my mom for her birthday.  This was the original idea I had for her cake the year before when I decided to make her Scrabble cake instead (see the Triple Word Score for 'CAKE' post); so I was very excited to finally get to make this for her.  She loves roses, and is very good at growing and taking care of them.

I started this cake by baking it in a ball pan.  I put a layer of buttercream icing over the whole cake (thicker than a crumb coat, but not as thick as a regular coat).

I rolled out some fondant I had tinted a color pink like one of her favorite roses and put it flat on the very top part of the cake.  This would give my fondant petals something stable to stick to at the beginning of constructing the rose.  I rolled out another thin piece of fondant and started with the middle curled petal of the rose.  I continued to layer my thin pieces of fondant around it to form the petals of the rose curling out the tops of the petals to give them that 'frilly' rose look.

I had intended on putting the green sepal 'leaves' at the base of the rose, but when I was running out of time I decided it looked fine without them.  Although I really like the way it turned out, looking back at it I wish I would've made the time to put them on as I think it would've just completed the look of the rose better [oh well, next time :) ].

My mom really loved the cake and thought it was just beautiful.  :)  I think my favorite view of the cake is looking down from the top.  It looks the most like a real rose that way.  :)

I've a Feeling We're Not in Kansas Anymore - June 2007

I made this cake for my sister, Valerie's, birthday. Growing up she liked the Wizard of Oz and still does, so I thought this would be good for her.

The basic idea for the cake came from a magazine article my sister, Casandra, read and told me about.  The basic idea being a cake that is only black and white (no color) on the outside and then when you cut into it it's rainbow on the inside.

I loved the idea and couldn't wait to use it, but I decided to modified it a little.  Instead of white and black I decided to do white and brown (sepia :) ).  I used shaved chocolate for the brown accents on the outside instead of icing.  (They had suggested that you could draw swirls and stuff with black icing on the outside in the article.)  I used some bigger curls of chocolate and some little shavings to give the look of debris from the tornado while still getting the dark/light contrast.  It's hard to see under the chocolate, but the pattern in the white icing on the top of the cake is a big swirl going out from the middle.

I made the tornado out of wire, and then I hung the house and fence from it with fishing line so it would look like they were flying around in the tornado.  There was supposed to be a cow too, but I ran out of time.  :)  I made the house and fence out of fondant.  The cake was on a turntable so you could spin it and make the house and fence swing out a little and look even more like they were spinning in the tornado, but we only spun it once because it was a little more top heavy than I had anticipated and I didn't want the tornado to fall over.  :)

I didn't tell anyone that it was rainbow inside, so when we cut into it and everyone saw the rainbow colors it kind of gave that 'magical' feel like the movie had in that scene.  I used a checkerboard cake pan set to get the different sections of color.  (The original idea from the article was to have colors layered one on top another, but I had gotten this checkerboard pan for Christmas and hadn't used it yet, so what better time.  :) )  To get the different colors I just used a white cake mix and then mixed food coloring into the different parts of the batter before I baked it.
