Giant 3D Donut Cake - November 2010

I made this giant 3D donut cake for my donut-loving daughter, Carissa's, 6th birthday.

Giant 3D Donut Cake

I also made these little baby donuts to put in the kids' goodie bags.
Cheerio Donuts
Well, actually I ended up asking my kids and my sister, Casandra, to make them while I worked on the cake.  They were excited to get to make them, and they had a lot of fun.  My daughter, Cara, actually made some little donuts similar to these previously when she went over to her friend's house one time.  (They used Nutella and some different little toppings on theirs.)  I thought they were a really cute and fun idea.  So, to make ours, I put a little bit of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry buttercream icing in three separate bowls and put them in the microwave  about 5-10 seconds, just to thin the icing a little bit.  Then Casandra and the kids got Cheerios, dipped the top halves in the different icings, and then dipped them into different kinds of sprinkles.  And there you have it - some cute little baby donuts.  :)  We separated them into dozens, wrapped them up, and included one dozen in each goodie bag.  I thought a cute idea would have been to put them in tiny white boxes, but I just didn't have enough time to see what was out there.

More pictures and details on the cake to come... :)

Pink Iced Donuts with Sprinkles - November 2010

Well, my daughter, Carissa, LOVES donuts.  She was even having a donut themed party for her birthday this year.  So, instead of making cupcakes for her to share with her Kindergarten class at school on her birthday, I made her these pink iced donuts with sprinkles (her favorite at the time).

Cake Assist: That Cake is Dynamite! - August 2010

This is a crate of dynamite cake that my sister, Casandra, made for her husband, Joe.  When I got to her house for the party, she asked if I could help her out by painting the wood grain on the fondant boards that were on the cake.  So, I did.  :)

Basketball & Airplane Cookies - July & August 2010

I made these basketball cookies for my son, Caleb's, basketball team.

Basketball Cookies

Basketball Cookies - Close-Up of Cookie
To make the basketball cookies I mixed the sugar cookie dough according the directions for cut-out cookies and added some orange food coloring while it was mixing.  I rolled out the dough and cut out the circles.  Then, I baked and cooled the cookies completely.  I used a paintbrushes that I use for cakes and some slightly diluted black food coloring to paint the lines on the basketballs.

Caleb and his team really liked the basketball cookies.  It was a fun treat after a good game!
After making the basketball cookies I had some leftover dough.  We were going to be flying on our vacation, so I decided to use my airplane cookie cutter to make these little plane cookies to take on our trip with us.
Airplane Cookie

To make the airplane cookies, I just rolled out the dough, cut out the airplanes, baked them, and let them cool.

The kids thought they were cool, although by time we were going to eat them most had gotten broken from being in the carry-on bag.  Oh well, they still tasted yummy, and they were a nice treat to have on our layover.  :)

3D Horse Cake - June 2010

I made this horse cake for my daughter, Cara's, 11th birthday.

3D Horse Cake 13D Horse Cake - Back Angled View 1 3D Horse Cake - Front Angled View 13D Horse Cake - Back View
3D Horse Cake - Carved Cake Before IcedThe body and neck of the horse are made up of cakes baked in a 9"x 13" pan, a 7" x 11" pan - I think (those two mainly made up the body), a medium-sized glass measuring cup (which mainly made up the neck), and then various scraps or parts of another cake used to fill in or add to spots here and there.
After I got the main part of the body and neck assembled I added the head on with skewers.  The head is actually a hollow paper mache type craft egg that I had on hand (the same as used in my Spider-Man cake).  I covered it with foil.  You could, of course, use rice krispy treats for the head, a lot of people do, and you may get a better shape that way.  I wanted to fill out the head/face with some fondant or something to make it more of a realistic shape, but unfortunately I didn't have the time.  Once the head was on I carved the cake (and added on the scraps) to make the shape that I wanted.  Then I crumb coated the body and the neck and let the icing set.

3D Horse Cake - Cake and Structure Before IcingThe legs, tail, and the ears were made using foil wrapped around plastic wrap (just to not have to use so much foil).  As I mentioned with the head you could, of course, use rice krispy treats, modeling chocolate, etc. for any of the non-edible parts that I made if you’re comfortable with that medium or want to try it.

After I got the legs and tail in the position I wanted them, I iced over the whole cake with chocolate buttercream.  Then once the whole cake was iced I went over it with a hot knife (by dipping it in hot water) to smooth the icing out some.
3D Horse Cake - Back Angled View 3 The tail and mane were piped on using a grass tip with chocolate buttercream tinted black.  Then I added details on for the hooves and face.

Cara really loved her cake!  Yippee!  :)
