Now We Just Need a Really BIG Christmas Tree Cake - December 2009

I made this Christmas ornament cake for my daughter, Cara's, 5th grade Winter Party.  This was at the same party as the snowman cake that I made (see post - Frosting the Snowman, was a Jolly Happy Cake...).

Frosting the Snowman, was a Jolly Happy Cake... - December 2009

I made this snowman cake for my daughter, Cara's, 5th grade Winter Party.  Instead of each class having their own individual party they decided to have one big party for all the 5th graders.  I also made a Christmas ornament cake for the party which will be in the next post.

Christmas Ornament Cookies - December 2009

I made these Christmas ornament cookies for my son, Caleb's, 2nd grade class's Winter Party.

For these cookies I started by mixing up some sugar cookie dough using the directions for cut-out cookies.  I added in some green food coloring while mixing the dough to get the base color for the cookies.  Then I rolled out my cookie dough.  I didn't have an ornament shaped cookie cutter so I used a circle one to cut out the round part of the ornament.  Then I pinched off pieces of dough from the excess, pressed them onto the circle ornaments, and shaped them to look like the ornament tops.

After I baked the cookies and let them cool completely, I piped the outline of the ornament on with vanilla buttercream icing in a piping bag.  Next, I piped the lines that would be above and below the names and filled in the ornament tops.  Then I piped on the names.  I count the number of letters in a name, figure out which is the center letter, then start with that letter in the center of my space.  That way my names or words (usually) come out nice and centered and I don't run out of room.  :)  After finishing the names, I piped some cornelli lace in the big spaces above and below the names.  I piped it on using a thinner tip than I used for the outline to give it more of a delicate look.

I really loved how these cookies turned out.  Caleb was very excited to be able to share them with his class and teachers (we made ornament cookies with the teachers' names on them too).  Everyone loved them, and they especially thought it was cool to have their name on the cookie.  :)

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble Up These Turkey Hand Cookies - November 2009

I made these turkey hand cookies as a little treat for Thanksgiving.  I saw the basic idea for them while watching Nick Jr on TV with the kiddos.  The first picture is of Our Turkey Family :) , Caleb, Carissa, and Cara up top and Ronnie and me underneath.  I only did one cookie each of mine and Ronnie's hands, so the rest of the cookies were just of the kids' hands.

I just used a store bought sugar cookie mix to make these cookies.  I think I used the Betty Crocker mix that comes in a little foil package kind of thing.  Whether you find a scratch recipe, get a mix from the store, or buy premade cookie dough, make sure you make or modify the recipe for cut-out cookies.  The one I bought had one recipe for drop cookies and told you how to  change it for cut-out cookies.  When I was mixing all the ingredients together I also added a little bit of brown food coloring to get the color for the turkeys.

After the dough was ready I rolled it out onto my parchment paper.  I got another piece of parchment paper (you could use regular paper, wax paper, etc... whatever works) and traced each kids' hand.  Then I cut each paper hand out to use as my templates.  I placed the hands on the cookie dough and cut around them using a little paring knife.  I flipped the templates over every once in awhile so I could have some turkeys facing the opposite direction.  Then it was into the oven to bake.

After the cookies were done baking and completely cooled, I started to transform them into turkeys.  I tinted white buttercream icing with food coloring to make red, orange, and yellow.  I used that to pipe on the turkey feathers and the waddle that would be under the beak.  Then I attached a candy corn to the cookie with some icing for the beak, and I put a small dot of icing on the flat side of a mini chocolate chip to attach the turkey's eye.  So, there you have it, cute little turkey cookies.  The whole family really liked these special cookies, and the kids liked the fact that I traced their hands to make them.  When they ate the turkey cookies they wanted to find the ones that were 'their hand'.

We made yummy cookies and a fun memory at the same time.  :)

Cake Therapy :) - August 2009

My daughter, Cara, had to go to physical therapy for awhile after someone hit us in our van.  :(  I made this exercise ball cake for her physical therapist on her last session as a thank you for doing such a great job with Cara.  She really worked well with her and Cara really liked her.  One of the things they used during the sessions was a big yellow exercise ball, so I decided it would be cute to have Cara and her therapist sitting on top of it [not to scale, of course :) ].
