Motocross Themed Cake - August 2011

I made this Motocross themed cake for my brother-in-law, Joe's, birthday.  My mom and Joe were celebrating their birthdays at the same time this year, so I made this cake for the same party that I made my mom's Miche purse cake for (see post Miche Purse Cake).

I made the cake for Backpack in a batter bowl.  I carved the cake some on the sides to make her pockets.  Backpack is iced in buttercream.  The backpack flap, straps, eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are made out of fondant.  The outline around the eyes and eyebrows is painted on with food coloring.  The outline around the different parts of Backpack (straps, flap, pockets, etc) and the outline around the mouth is piped on with buttercream icing.  I used dowels or straws (I can't remember which now) to hold up the backpack flap.  I covered them with purple fondant because you could see them some when you looked from the side, so that helped them blend in a bit better.  Map and all of his features are made out of fondant.

For the hill I also used a batter bowl to bake the cake in.  The hill is iced in buttercream.  The grass lining the path and the flowers are piped on with buttercream using different tips.  The stars and their eyes and mouths are made out of fondant (their pupils are done with food coloring).  I put them on metal wire and put the wires into the cake so it would look like the stars were in the air above the hill.  The little cake, candle, and plate are made out of fondant.  The purple decorations on the cake and the flame of the candle are piped on with buttercream icing.  Dora is made from fondant.  (I was going to make Boots, but I ran out of time.)  Her pupils, nose, and mouth are painting on with food coloring.  She saw the cake at the top of the hill and is just about to climb up and celebrate.  :)  'Where are we going... to the cake; where are we going... to the cake...' (That's for all you Dora fans, or parents of Dora fans.  :) )

Deep in The Hundred Acre Wood... - November 2006

These are the Winnie the Pooh themed cakes I made for my daughter, Carissa's, 2nd birthday.  One was a honey pot cake and the other was a beehive cake.

The honey pot cake and the beehive cake are both baked from the same glass batter bowl, one is just turned over to give it a different shape.  They are iced with buttercream, and the 'honey' is buttercream icing as well.  The word 'HUNNY' is piped on the honey pot cake with black icing.  The Winnie the Pooh figures are just 2 Lego Winnie the Pooh toys.  (I didn't have time to make my own.)  I put a little of the yellow 'honey' icing on Winnie the Pooh's hand on the beehive cake to make it look like he was eating the honey.  I made the bees out of fondant and then painted on them with food coloring.  This was the first time I had used fondant for anything, so that was neat.

Under the Sea... Under the Sea... - July 2006

This is one of the Ariel (Little Mermaid) themed cakes I made for my daughter, Cara's, 7th birthday.  (See the It's... a... Dinglehopper! post for information and more pictures of the other cake and some cookies that I also made for the party.)

Ariel, The Little Mermaid, King Triton's Castle Cake 2

King Triton's Castle Cake with Treasure Chest Cake

The main part of the King Triton's Castle cake is made using one cake I baked in a batter bowl and one smaller cake I baked in a big glass measuring cup.  The towers on the castle were baked in regular and mini ice cream cones, then I peeled away the cone to use the cake that was formed inside.  All the cake was iced using buttercream icing.

The seaweed around the cake is a green fruit roll-up that I cut and twisted.  The only non edible items on Triton's castle are the thin spires which are toothpicks covered in icing, and then Ariel, Triton, Sebastian, and Flounder are pictures printed out from the computer that I laminated.
