School Nurse Thank You Cake - June 2015

At the end of the school year I made this cake for the nurse at my daughter Carissa's school.  She had been there almost the whole time Carissa had been in school and we found out that she was going to be going to a different school the next year.  We really loved her as our school nurse and decided to make her this cake as a thank you/we'll miss you gift.

Sock Monkey Teacher Appreciation Cake - June 2015

I made this sock monkey cake for my daughter Carissa's 4th grade 'switch' teacher (who loved sock monkeys) as an end of the year thank you gift.  She taught the students science, math, and social studies; so, I represented each subject on the cake... 'sock monkey style'. 🐵

Owl Teacher Appreciation Cake - June 2015

This cake was one that I made for my daughter Carissa's GT teacher at school.  We thought that it would be cute to put owls on the cake.  Soon after I started drawing it we found out that she liked ladybugs; so I added a couple in the picture. 🐞😉

Eat Your Vegetables... - June 2014

I made this asparagus cake for my sister Valerie for her birthday.  I saw the inspiration for this cake originally on a Sunday Sweets post on the Cake Wrecks site.  It had a link to the original post from Rosie at Sweetapolita where I saw how she made her AMAZING asparagus cake (and another here).  My sister usually cooks fresh asparagus and brings it to our family meals, so I thought this would be a fun cake to make for her.

All You Need is Faith and Trust... and a Little Bit of Birthday Cake! - November 2013

This is the Peter Pan themed cake I made for my daughter Carissa's 9th birthday.

Hand Painted Peter Pan Scenes Cake 1

Hand Painted Peter Pan Scenes Cake 2

To make this cake I baked 2 six inch cakes, 2 eight inch cakes, and 2 nine inch cakes.  I leveled them, stacked them (using bubble straws and cake boards in between for supports), and iced them.

I measured the circumference and height of each layer.  Then, I rolled out and cut to size three pieces of white fondant.  After that I wrapped the corresponding fondant around each layer of cake.

I used my airbrush food coloring drops, paint brushes (only used for cakes), and toothpicks to paint the scenes on the fondant.  I had printed out different scenes that my daughter picked out from the Peter Pan movie, and I used those to reference to as I painted.

After I was finished painting I sprinkled some gold shimmer dust on the tops of the cakes where the icing was showing to resemble pixie dust.

If I had more time I would've had more pictures on it and some of the pictures (like the mermaids) would have come out better.  Why do you ask did I not have time...?  Well, this was not the first cake I made for her birthday party.  The first cake was going to be the Big Ben clock tower with the characters on the clock hand, but that cake met an unfortunate demise. :(  So, the cake above was a starting over from scratch Plan B that began late the night before the party and finished right up until her party started.  :O

I was pleased with the way the cake turned out though, and my daughter was really happy with it.

[I may update the post with a little more details on the first cake and a few pictures, but for now it'll have to wait.  :) ]

Switchfoot Themed Cake Balls - October 2013

These are cake balls I made for the band members of Switchfoot and their crew as part of the Switchfoot Baking Club.  I decorated them with various 'Switchfoot themed' items, and brought them to their Fading West movie viewing and concert back in October.

[The little picture of the guitar to the side is a correction on one of the guitars that I had made that I delivered at a later date.  I got it wrong and it bugged me. ;) ]

More pictures and details to come... :)

The Pigeon Helps Make a Birthday Cake - November 2012

I made this Mo Willems themed cake for my daughter, Carissa, for her 8th birthday.  Mo Willems is one of her favorite authors so she decided to have a Mo Willems themed party.  She picked 8 different characters that she would want as part of the party [she decided 8 would be good since she was turning 8 :) ].

Mo Willems Themed Cake 1 - The Pigeon, The Duckling, Elephant, Piggie, Leonardo the Terrible Monster, Naked Mole Rat, Knuffle Bunny, the Mice

Mo Willems Themed Cake 2 - The Pigeon, The Duckling, Elephant, Piggie, Leonardo the Terrible Monster, Naked Mole Rat, Knuffle Bunny, the Mice

The characters were made out of fondant.  I rolled it fairly thin and let it dry a bit.  (This just made it a little easier to draw on; the marker wouldn't stick or drag so much as it would on fresh soft fondant.)  Then I drew the characters with a black food coloring marker. I used a small paring knife to cut the characters out, and then I painted them with food coloring.  I went over the outline with the food coloring marker on any places that needed it.  I attached lollipop sticks (maybe toothpicks on some) to the backs of the characters using fondant and water.

More pictures and details to come... :)

I made this Star Wars: The Clone Wars themed cake for my daughter, Cara, for her 13th birthday!  She came up with the basic idea for this cake and had a lot of input into the design.  :)
