Mickey Mouse Ears Teacher Appreciation Cake - June 2013

I made this Mickey Mouse themed cake for my son, Caleb's, 5th grade teacher.  Our family had taken a trip to Disney World during the year and his teacher had shared with us how much she loved Disney World.  Later she told us that after she found out we were going she talked to her husband and they were going to go on a trip to Disney World in the summer.  :)  So, I thought this would be a special cake for her from us.  [She LOVED the cake!  :) ]

At first I put a tail on the back of the cake, but ultimately I decided to not use it.  I didn't end up liking the way it looked from the front with the tail.  These two pictures are of different views when the tail was still on the cake.

  1. What are the ears made from and how did you get them to stick in the cake?

    1. Thanks for your question. The ears are circles cut out of black fondant. I let them dry as much as I could so they would hold their shape. To get them to stick into the cake I made a small cut into the fondant about the size of the ear. Then I inserted the ear into the slit. I ended up cutting some of the circle off that would be going into the cake to make it follow more along the curve of the cake. I used some water along the slit I made to help the ear adhere to the black fondant covering the head. Hope that helps! :)
